Color of Nature, Abundance, and Prosperity

1. Origins

Dresden Green Diamond

Green diamond has been found throughout history in places such as South America as well as mines in Africa. Taking a glimpse into the past there have been several famous green diamonds throughout history. Dresden Green Diamond is one famously known green diamond of 40.7 carats having a natural green color. Other popular diamonds include the Ocean Dream and the Chopard Chameleon each having a rich history behind it.

What is special about green diamond is that unlike other natural fancy-colored stones whose color appears due to the presence of impurities, green diamonds get their color due to atomic radiation.

2. How does it get its color?

The green diamond attains its color from the exposure to radioactivity and atomic radiation for over a million years. The longer it is exposed to radiation the more vivid the green color. It retains none of the dangerous effects of radiation as the green light reflected is only the radioactive stains left behind.

In order to recognize a natural green diamond easily, polishers leave a small unpolished area that showcase the stones natural color.

3. Intensity levels

Green Diamond Color Grading

The diamond intensity ranges from light green to a fancy deep hue. Look at the range in the scale given below.

Pure green diamonds are a rare find. In most cases the green diamond comes in secondary colors and hues such as yellows, blues to browns and greys.

The diamonds that don’t exhibit a secondary color are known as ‘True Green’.

4. Diamond price

It is one of the rare colors in the fancy color diamond range and therefore a bit pricier that some other colored diamonds. Finding a good quality fancy green diamond is difficult however an alternative would be to finding a diamond that has secondary and tertiary hues.

Hues such as yellow and blue are a delightful twist to the green diamond that is easy on the eyes and the bank as well!
